Celebration of nature journaling!

Season Sketchers

Nature artist Angela Hennessy has created an art challenge called Season Sketchers. The idea is to get in touch with important dates throughout the year to mark the changes that we see in nature. We can celebrate the longest and shortest days of the year as well as other significant dates on the calendar. Angela uses the Celtic Wheel of the Year, but you can use whatever dates are significant for your place and culture. Click here to learn more about Season Sketchers and how you can celebrate where you live.

Nature journaling prompts and ideas

Find out if there are any nature-based festivals in your area. Nature-inspired celebrations take place all over the world. For example, in the state of Michoacan, Mexico, the Monarch Festival takes place to say farewell to monarch butterflies before they make their long journey north. Several months later, at a small provincial park in southern Ontario, the great-great grandchildren of those same monarchs are celebrated on their way south during the annual Monarchs and Migrants Weekend.

Is there someone in your life whose nature appreciation you can celebrate? How can you let them know? If someone encouraged your own nature journal practice, consider how you can celebrate their gift to you. This touching blog post describes how a family celebrates a little boy’s nature discoveries.

Celebrate the sounds of birdsong. Birdsong is always around us - imagine being outdoors without it! Depending on where you live it may change throughout the year. You can celebrate the return of certain songs as American conservationist Aldo Leopold did. Is there a bird song that you associate with this time of year? This lovely representation of common North American forest songbirds lets you click on a bird to hear its unique tune.

Can you create a ritual to celebrate your own nature journal practice? Sometimes it’s as simple as pulling out your kit with your daily morning coffee. Or maybe you create a special label every time you fill a sketchbook. You can listen to how this nature journaler creates a unique teatime ritual to celebrate nature and history.
